A group of 3 hopped on board at 8am and we were at our 1st spot by 9:45. Once we let the fish know we were there (with our thinly sliced sardine pieces for chum), the snapper started getting fired up! We were catching them on lighter tackle using both live shrimp and cut baits. Before long, we had over 10 beautiful fish on ice. They were taking our offerings anywhere from the surface to the bottom. And, it was a fun bite too, because most of the fish were taking our baits on the sink. We were using light jigs with live shrimp on only 20lb test.
At our 2nd spot, we caught more (and slightly bigger) snapper, more Key West Grunts, a nice Flounder and the Spanish Mackerel showed up as well. The area was holding lots of cigar minows that were being hammered by the Macks. As usual, the Goliath Grouper were patrolling the bottom and inhaling whatever bigger live baits we dropped their way.
Whoever else was on the Gulf of Mexico yesterday knows that the conditions were “postcard” - absolutely beautiful and calm. Bait was crashing the surface, we saw an Eagle Ray take flight, lots of dolphin, and even a sea turtle on our ride back in. All of that happened on “just” a half day trip!
The customer who booked the trip texted me earlier that they their entire group on vacation here, had fresh fish for dinner and even have enough fish left for more today! As normal, their entire catch was filleted, bagged, and iced to take back to their condos.
It’s an awesome feeling to take guests out on the local waters here, and give them a first hand experience of why Florida is truly the “Fishing Capital of the World.”
