If you have ever fly fished one of the periodical cicada hatches then you know what all the fuss is about. Everything eats them. Its a feeding frenzy and the best bite in freshwater. Since these bugs hatch in different locations every 13-17 yrs depending on the brood we can really only guess when the ground temp will be right for the emergence. For Brood X in 2021 the ground was 65 degrees and date was May 21. Thats when we saw them on the water being gobbled by fish. Smallmouth, Brown trout, Rainbow trout. Massive Mirror and Common carp. All rising to the surface. I have fished and guided several of these miracle hatches with great success over the years. Im kinda a Cicada expert. This is the coldest worst weather time of the year. We have been practically snow/iced in for almost a week but this too will pass so keep reading. This coming week we are looking at highs in the 50’s and low 60’s. Water levels are high in all the tributary rivers and that is what is expected this time of year. With the warming trend and cabin fever setting in its time to ignore bad weather and get out there on the water. The big secret to catching fish is just making the attempt. The trout will stay at cetain depths in the river and a slow natural drift really does the trick. Winter weather is actually preferred by Trout.
