If nothing else, you can always count on the stellar deep sea fishing St Augustine promises year after year. Just minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, this destination allows you to reap the benefits of the Gulf Stream and still make it home in time for dinner. Here, a never ending supply of bottom fish is matched by a parade of pelagic trophies that just won’t quit—even when the hustle and bustle of summer fades away.
What to Catch and When to Target it
For a chance to catch the biggest fish in the area, head to the Bluewater roughly 40-60 miles offshore. Weather permitting, you’ll always find something biting out here.
You can enjoy fishing the offshore wrecks and reefs for Black Seabass, Vermillion Snapper, Triggerfish, and other bottom fish throughout much of the year. In cooler months, Grouper, Cobia, and Pompano tend to peak. While trolling offshore at this time you might catch Barracuda, Blackfin Tuna, King Mackerel, and Wahoo.
As the weather heats up, you’ll start to see more Amberjack and Mangrove Snapper near the wrecks and reefs. In spring you can take advantage of Mahi Mahi’s peak season, followed by a second wave in autumn. In early summer you might catch Blue Marlin while trolling offshore, along with Sailfish.
If you’re aiming for the Gulf Stream, plan to spend a good 10-12 hours on the water. These extended day trips are the best way to experience St Augustine’s deep sea fishing to the fullest.
Depending on the season, you may be able to catch some big game fish like Wahoo and Mahi Mahi closer to shore on a full day (or even a half day) trip, anywhere from 5-10 miles out. Keep in mind that it’s more common to catch King Mackerel, Cobia, Tarpon, Sharks, and a variety of bottom fish while casting lines this close to shore.
How to Fish
Depending on your target species, you can expect to spend your time offshore either trolling or bottom fishing (often both). Trolling is ideal for catching the fast and ferocious Wahoo, Mahi Mahi, Tuna, King Mackerel, Bonito, Marlin, and Sailfish. Baits might include live Ballyhoo and Mullet, cut bait, or lures.
Jigging and bottom fishing near wrecks, reefs, and other bottom structure will bring you a variety of critters such as Black Seabass, Snapper, Grouper, Cobia, and more. Cut bait and live bait can both prove effective, with common choices including Sardines, Mullet, and Pinfish. You might also use frozen Squid or a bucktail jig.
