It was a first-time experience for me, my gal (30 years in S.Florida), & guests from Outwest. Just 4 of us. On a HUGE boat. I own my own small boat. Conditions were too rough at the time for us to use my little 17-footer. A couple years ago, we cruised the kids up/down the Intercoastal once before. We had a great lunch at Light House Point marina. Planned on taking them out for a diving lesson during their Christmas stay. The weather was not so great, although I’ve been stuck out there in my boat as conditions change. Windy, rainy 3-4 foot seas. So, we went for broke & booked this for the kids. But we enjoyed it as a new adventure. Nothing to take home was biting. Yes, the 2 kids each caught a huge Barracuda. That was new to them. They enjoyed that. We, nor anyone can blame the fish bite on the captain or conditions. That’s called Fishing. We know that. It was a good, interesting, new experience. Until we were unloading. In front of our guests, the captain criticized our 12-ish percent “gratuity”. For such an easy trip for them. No fish filet, special requests, et al. Wanted 20 %. Pretty much ruined our disappointing fishing catch. Which I ‘ll say again. You can’t blame the captain for the fish bite. But the initial cost is quite large for folks on a budget. Especially when the waiter demands a larger tip without asking them for any extra services. The mate, Nick, I believe, was nice. Friendly, seemed knowledgeable. We paid extra $100 for a dozen Goggle Eyes. Think we used 5??? Do they offer a refund?? Not to us. Never went out past 300 feet trolling, I believe. Maybe it’s my bad I wasn’t MORE specific of deep-water fish?? live & learn?? Again, it was a first time on this kind of experience here. Is this the normal?? When it comes to unboarding?? A slow easy day for the captain & mate requires a huge tip for not even going offshore & trying to do something to catching take-home filets? We trolled up & down at basically the same depth. Loved the educational time about Kite fishing. Never seen that up close. Yes, a lot of work for the mate. Once again, as bad a day as it was fishing, The captain had no remorse & stayed steady to the time limit. And insulted us in front of guests at the exit. Fishing is luck. I’d like to believe there are better, more compassionate captains around here?? Last words. Fish bite is luck. Choose your captain wisely. Was good, new, interesting. Up to the goodbye.???
