Captain Jerry was honest and thoughtful about the whole experience. He told us the weather wasn’t great but he’d do his best to get us into fish. He also knew we had a couple of new fishermen and was extremely patient and helped them work hard to get their first catches.
We started with a run for some drum in the shallows. We did hook a stingray and he was very careful to show the kids how he will break off the leader and release the ray with minimal wear and tear. Once the tide got low he took us out to the inlet.
In the inlet we saw large fish moving, likely rays, and we were on bluefish almost instantly. We were able to bring in four nice sized fish with a whole bunch getting away. Once we lost a couple to broken leaders, Jerry rerigged the gear with bigger lb leaders and we were able to hold the bluefish a lot better. Everyone had the chance to get a couple of fish on and bring in some nice fish.
On the way in we tried to stop for more drum opportunities but the weather was quickly turning and we opted to head in a bit early. Jerry offered to cut the rate due to lost time, which was very kind of him but unnecessary. We enjoyed his knowledge and kind demeanor.
I will say that given the weather and how Captain Jerry was feeling upon our arrival, I had low hopes for success. He definitely exceeded my expectations and if we ever get down later in the spring we will be sure to sign up again!
