Here is why I will not book this trip again:
1. Boat is not big enough for 4 people + guide to safely fish
——- twenty three foot flat bottom with very shallow sides, and narrow passages to the front
——- 2 seats on a cooler in the front and 2 seats on the console for 5 people on the boat
2. Captain does not consider the safety of his passengers when on the water
——-Drives too fast over rough water
——-Got the boat airborne multiple times
——-Took water over the front of the boat (speared) in 3’-4’ waves multiple times
——-Does not make sure his passengers are secure before moving the boat
——-Did not even mention life jackets at any point in the trip
3. He only allows one person to fish when there are 4 people on the boat
4. He fishes while you watch, then let’s you reel in when he catches something
5. He does not listen to his passengers’ requests
My experience:
While heading out to shark fish, we found a school of redfish and crevalles. Captain threw out light tackle and immediately caught a large crevalle. Handed me the reel and the fight with the fish was on. 40 minutes into the fight, the captain realized that a current had pulled us into 3’-4’ waves, which were now coming over the back of the boat, and the back of the boat was almost under water. While I was still on the back of the boat trying to reel in the fish, he put it in gear and started to move, which almost caused me to go off the back.
I started to walk to the front of the boat, still holding the rod, and he put the boat in gear and started to move again. I still did not have a chance to grab anything for support. This time, while he was moving, a wave hit the side of the boat and knocked me off into the water. According to his depth finder we were in about 40’ of water; we had 3-4’ waves, and there was a strong current pulling the boat. I was able to quickly swim back to the boat. As my brothers were helping me into the boat, the captain asked, “Where’s my rod!?” Nevermind that one of your passengers is in the water.
I chose to save my life instead of his rod, so the rod and the fish were lost. Because I didn’t want to ruin a trip with brothers and my wife, we chose to stay out and continue to fish. Captain threw out another lure and caught another crevalle, which we were able to get into the boat. We took pics of our catch and threw it back. He said we needed that fish because he owed a fish to a guy that loaned him one. 1. You should have been paying attention to your passengers when the fish was on the boat. 2. It’s not my responsibility to pay your debt.
After that, he threw shark bait in the water and we sat for 3 hours waiting for a shark to bite. We were not able to fish for anything else because he didn’t want any other lines in the water. I asked if we could just go find more reds or crevalles just so we could catch something, so he reeled in the shark bait and moved the boat back into the rough water, where he threw the shark bait back out. After he realized it was getting dangerous again, and we requested to leave, he took us back into the marina.
At the marina, he asked us to pay the for the rod/reel HE LOST. Because we are good people, we gave him some money. I have no ill will toward the captain, but I will not book another trip with him.

First of all I would like to point out the title of the trip you booked with me…..Half Day Shark Trip. So no you can’t fish for anything else because that’s not what I prepared for and you can’t just drop down light tackle in a strong current because your line will just get tangled up in our “Shark fishing lines” aka the whole reason for the trip. Don’t guide the guide!
With that being said all I had brought with me was my shark fishing poles and two small bay rods just in case we needed them, and we did since we found a giant school of jacks and reds. The fact that you said I don’t have any regard for the safety of my clients is total bs when in fact every time we would move the boat I ask if everybody was ready to go and y’all said yes! So now that’s that’s clear! I told them at the dock where the dry storage was and that the life jackets were in the front of the boat! It’s not my fault you don’t listen while pointing at the dolphins at the fish cleaning station.
As for my boat not being sea worthy for 5 passengers, it’s rated for 6 people from the manufacture it says it on the boat and iv personally took that boat offshore multiple times in the past with 5 passengers and had zero problems. We came up on a large school of jacks and bull redfish prior to arriving to our shark fishing spot. I asked if they wanted to try and catch some, they said yes so we did. We hooked up to a nice jack and he fought it for around 30 min. Seeing how he handled himself on the boat and worked the rod reeling in this fish I knew this guy was not an experienced fisherman. So I adjusted accordingly for who was able to get up and cast at the school! As he fought the fish we were at the mercy of the current and waves, I tried my best to keep us with the fish and safely maneuvering around 30+ other boats trying to get on the same school as us. Note that I personally seen 4 or 5 skiffs (14 to 18 ft. In length) around us with three people on them having no problem with the waves. (So a 23 foot boat with 5 people is more than qualified for these conditions, ITS ALSO A CATAMARAN HULL NOT A FLAT BOTTOM BOAT and is even more suitable for rougher conditions).
I’ll forgive your ignorance there I assume! As the fish went from the back of the boat to the front I told him to follow the fish and as he did he lost his footing and fell in OFF THE SIDE NOT THE BACK YOU LIER AND THE BOAT WAS NOT IN GEAR! You didn’t know how to even fight a fish much less operate a vessel so don’t tell me the boat was in gear skippy! I immediately helped him back in the boat (read that again!), that’s when I notice he had let go of my rod. You damn right I asked where my $200 dollar set up went! After that I said let’s go to the shark spot and do what we came out to do or would y’all like to try and catch another one….they said let’s try and catch another one! If it was so rough and dangerous why didn’t they pick the shark spot that was in calmer waters??? So we got back on the school and immediately hooked up to another jack and landed it, all was good. We then proceeded to go fish for sharks and only had one good run that unfortunately didn’t get a good hook set and got off. After a while of waiting for another bite they asked if they could GO BACK AND FIND THE SCHOOL OF FISH!
Again if it was so unsafe why would u tell me to go back over there. So we did and the school had went down so I cruised over to another shark spot, it was pretty rough there and I only had the lines out for a short time before I said it was to rough! Also I fished 45 min past the 4 hour set time I’m supposed to because I wanted to get them a shark. Long story short maybe you should exercise your sea legs before booking a trip on the ocean lieutenant Dan or stick to a safer environment like a nice game of checkers.
