10 hours with Captain Tyler
ПодтвержденныйHad a 10 hour trip with Captain Tyler. Comfortable boat for the long ride well offshore (25 plus miles). Captain and Mate Jessie were fun to be with. We caught our limit plus on red snapper, 16 vermillion snapper, several white snapper and two nice AJs. This is not a trip for someone who does not want to work for the fish. Because we were fishing from 150 to 250 feet of water with heavy rods, be prepared to spend a lot of time and energy reeling. Some of the time we were dropping 24 ounce lead 220 feet deep. Even without a fish, it is work to reel in. With a big fish, it requires strong arms and back. If you want a big physical challenge, this will do it. Spinning tackle seems to be for catching bait even though the vermillion and white snapper would be a lot more fun with heavy spinning tackle.
We were disappointed in the quality of maintenance of some of the fishing tackle. One Penn reel squeaked every time it was reeled. A rod used for catching bait was missing the last 2 rod guides which caused the line to get wrapped around the end.
Fishing booker said we would get contacted by the captain a few days before the trip. We assumed that would be to discuss targeted fish, etc. This did not happen. Be clear with the Captain on what you want to do. We mentioned never catching a wahoo and how that would be nice. We spent significant time trolling to wahoo although it did not appear that the likelihood of a strike was very high. That is at least partly our fault but I would have liked to hear that our chance of success was very low.
Bottom line, if you want to really physically challenge yourself with a chance to catch some big fish (we did boat 2 AJs about 30 lbs each) this is a good trip. But plan on working for your fish.

Bruce,
I’m sorry to hear your trip wasn’t everything you expected. I spoke with you a day or two before the trip and asked you if you wanted the Captain to call you and you said, “no”. Catching 2 Amberjacks over 30 lbs is not very common and would be great to quite a lot of people. Amberjack are a tough fish to catch though. They put up a big fight, which makes it a big accomplishment once you get them in the boat. We do our absolute best to ensure all our rods and reels are in great condition, but with tons and tons of charters, we will sometimes get one that squeaks. Please feel free to ask for another one if you come out again in the future. With the main focus being on catching fish, Jesse just tries to drop as many lines as possible for the best opportunities. Last but not least, the wahoo. Unfortunately, Tyler could not tell you whether the possibility of catching a wahoo was low because quite a few of the charters previous to yours did in fact catch them. That’s the difficulty with trolling. They are migratory fish so their location continually changes, as well as their eating habits. There are quite a few factors that can change the dynamics. Tyler spent the time trying very hard to get you the wahoo. I hope I’ve addressed all your frustrations.
Tight lines!!
