This is my fifth time going out with Captain Nikola. I’ve previously gone on Dentex, Bluefish and Tuna trips but this one was just all you can wish for.
Nikola brought his friend Alen who is a representative of Croatia’s national competitive sportfishing team so the crew and vibe was amazing.
The targeted species for this trip was Bluefin Tuna. We departed our marina at 5am, stocked up with bait sardines and mackerel as bait and took about an hour to get to the fishing grounds, about 12 miles out where the sardine trawlers pull out the nets.
We started fishing and chumming, and within 15 minutes we were hooked into a huge 140 kilo Bluefin Tuna. We decided to keep it, with the intention to release the next one. The fight left every muscle in my body aching.
Within the next hour we had a second bite and we managed to pull in a 70 kilo one, which Alen released after a brief fight to keep the fish in the best possible condition.
We started jigging for Bonito and caught a nice one because we noticed them feeding around us and rigged up an ultralight Tuna rod just in case we got lucky the third time and sure enough we did! Nikola pulled out the third fish, another 70 kilo Bluefin after a hard 30 minute fight, as the gear was so light he had to be extremely careful not to lose it.
Altogether it was just an amazing time, great time on the boat and everybody caught as much fish as we could handle.
Definitely repeating this soon!
