A guide’s job is to crack the code. My first casts into those areas were done to scout the bite and prove to a novice angler that the fish were active in the cover. The reality of that day was that the fish were holding tight to heavy cover, requiring highly specific presentations.

Since we were limited strictly to spinning gear to accommodate your comfort level, accuracy was paramount. When the guide is catching fish and the client isn’t, it usually comes down to casting precision and lure presentation, rather than a lack of opportunity. Because those tight-cover targets required a high level of casting precision, the margin for error was very small. Had the conditions allowed for a baitcasting setup, we would have had a few more tools at our disposal.
