Trolling Lake Huron Southern Basin in Late Spring: May and June May and June are my favourite times to fish the southern basin of Lake Huron. The larger Chinooks are relatively close to shore, the Coho are getting bigger, and by June the Walleye are just beginning to show up. To make things even more fun, we have the annual Bluewater Anglers Salmon Derby during the 1st week of May. Launching out of Port Franks, Ontario, we have the best fishing grounds in southern Lake Huron, especially this time of year. We have easy access to the fishing grounds with many spots to choose from and all of them are amazing from one day to the next. I will be looking for schools of bait fish, pockets of warmer water (spring water temps will generally be in the mid 40°F’s to high 50°F’s), and at least 5’ of visibility into the water. Often there will be what we call a “mud line” where the warmer turbid water offers a spot for the predators to hide and ambush bait in the cleaner water outside the mud line. Trolling along or in and out of this line is a good place to start. Another thing to watch for is a temperature break. This is where warmer water is being pushed by the wind and cooler water is backfilling behind it. Fishing the temperature break has always been productive for me. We are fishing from 20 FOW to 60 FOW depending on the conditions mentioned above. We will be using planer boards pulling 2–6 colours of lead, down riggers with sliders, as well as dipsy divers. The target depth will vary from day to day, but safe to say anywhere from 10’ down to 40’. It’s important to note with the cooler temperatures you need to dress appropriately, a warm sunny day on shore can be still quite cold on the water. Fortunately, at Port Franks Charters, we have a completely enclosed cabin that will seat 6 people comfortably. With state-of-the-art 3D sonar, live sonar and radar, we ensure our guests a safe and productive trip. Our 27’ 2023 Kingfisher is customized for the Great Lakes, powered by a 2023 Yamaha 250hp she is reliable and powerful.
