No matter what time of year you head to the southernmost tip of the US, thrilling fishing awaits. What to Expect
Incredible fishing awaits just seconds from shore. Even a four-hour Key West inshore fishing charter will see you fill the boat. If you want to hone your fishing skills, trips also last six or eight hours. Hop aboard and test your skills against some tough-fighting beasts.
Backcountry
For non-stop, rod-bending action, hit the backcountry. These waters are overflowing with feed that predators love to hunt. Sight cast in the clear water and go after anything from a monster Tarpon to delicious Snappers and Trout.
The backcountry is the ideal place to learn to fish. The water here is calm and gentle, so you won’t get seasick! With the prospect of a bite every minute, you’ll be a pro in no time. Your experienced guide will show you how it’s done, while avid anglers will love the non-stop fishing.
Flats
If you’re a seasoned angler then a trip to the flats won’t disappoint. Your best bet of landing the Grand Slam is in these murky waters. Utilize all your skills and cast without disturbing the spooky fish around you. As you feel the bite, you’ll know that you’re in for a thrilling battle.
Most Key West inshore fishing charters take place aboard skiffs or flats boats. Your captain will power the boat with a push pole, allowing you to navigate even the skinniest of waters. You’ll mainly sight cast, so keep your eye out for boats with a casting platform.
How to Prepare
You’ll want to cover up from the sun. Wear long sleeves, a cap, and bring sunscreen. Check with your captain if they provide water, but you’ll want to bring some snacks and drinks of your own too.
If you want to go fly fishing, check with your captain if the gear is included. In most cases, you’ll be advised to bring your own.

I was told years ago by several Marine Patrol Agents in Key West who would you fish with in Key West and both said Captain Brad with the Southpaw. My family and friends went out with Captain Brad about 14 years ago the first time and were very happy with our fishing trip. Captain Brad is a very Professional and experienced fisherman.

At first we booked this trip without targeting something specific so we could maybe catch a little bit of everything, but our captain suggested us tarpon because we wanted something with action and it was a good time to target them. It didn’t disappoint! Amazing experience like nothing else!

Don’t expect to always catch a huge amount of fish. The fishing is not like it used to be. You are lucky to catch a few. Tell Capt if u prefer to catch to eat or catch for fun /size. That matters.

Book the whole day, it took close to 45 minutes to get on the fishing spots so a 4 hour trip would not give you as much time to fish. Be open and listen to your captains as they are very knowledgeable. I’ve fished freshwater species but this was my first time in saltwater and there are differences I had to make but they coached me through it. Great experience.

Key West Charter Fishing – Shallows
These were great for anglers with little to moderate experience with Gulf fishing, and they’d be good for people with more experience. We caught a wide variety of fish and had fun. The 2 captains were a cool twist as both were very knowledgeable and very helpful. I would highly recommend these guys.
