Fishing in Рамсгит
Less than two hours from London is the coastal town of Ramsgate. This is one of many seaside towns that dot the southeastern coast of the UK, overlooking the North Sea. This summer hot spot is not only known for its popular beach – the fishing in Ramsgate is also something to write home about! There are plenty of sandbanks, wrecks, and reefs for anglers to drop a line into, all of which are not too far from shore.
What to Expect
There are multiple places and structures to fish off of the coast of Ramsgate, including the Goodwin Sands, where multiple wrecks now lie. Book a full day trip to fully appreciate the various fishing grounds or a half day trip to head to just one of the fishing grounds available. Anglers visiting the area can also fish from Ramsgate East Pier or the beach – you’ll need to fish early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the crowds during the summer.
The species in these waters change with the seasons. From May to October you may be able to target Sea Bream, Thornback Ray, European Seabass, Pollock, Plaice, Mackerel, Smoothound, Dogfish, and plenty more. The other half of the year is great for reeling in Skate and Whiting, as well as Thornback Ray and Dogfish. Around 30 species call the waters of Ramsgate home at some point during the year, allowing anglers to wet a line year round.
How to Prepare
You won’t need a licence when sea fishing in the UK. Grab your 9’ rod with a 60 lb leader, stock up on live bait such as squid and herring, and you’ll be ready to fish.
Most fishing charters will provide drinks on their trips, but you’ll usually need to bring your own snacks. Don’t forget to tip the first mate 15–20% of the total trip price after the trip, which helps to cover the filleting of the catch.
Spend a day fishing in Ramsgate and you’ll be coming home with some great species perfect for dinner!
