Cod is famous around the world for being one of the most delicious fish that you can get your hands on. Want to know a secret ingredient that makes it taste even better? Catching your very own in one of the most famous fishing destinations the East Coast has to offer! Thanks to its location right on the tip of Long Island, Montauk has earned itself the tongue-in-cheek nickname of “The Last Resort” – but its incredible variety of Cod fishing charters are proof that, when it comes to hooking tasting table fare, it should be first on your list!
What to Expect
If you’ve only ever seen it fried and served up as a delicious meal, you might be surprised to discover that Cod can measure up to 30 inches, and can tip the scales anywhere between 4 to 75 pounds. With all this weight to carry around, no wonder it’s a bottom-dweller!
Also known as the Atlantic Cod, this fish prefers to hang out around offshore wrecks and rough ocean floors, as well as near the continental shelf. When it comes to the “How” of catching your bottom-dweller, it only makes sense that you’ll be bottom fishing. Generally, you’ll drift along your fishing hotspot, and will jig your chosen lure or bait close to the ocean floor, using sinkers. This technique is suitable for beginners and experienced anglers alike, and most charter captains will happily show newbies the ropes.
Although the technique is no obstruction when it comes to who can fish for Cod, something to consider is how much time you want to spend on the water. In order to really plumb the depths for some brag-worthy fish, most Cod charters in the area recommend opting for a trip that lasts at least eight hours. Your captain will usually take you to the wrecks southeast of Block Island, which are at least 25 miles from Montauk – but when you see the size of the Cod on offer, it’s definitely worth it.
Need to Know
Although Cod is technically a year-round species, the best time to target this tasty table fare is in the early spring (March and April) or December, when a whole host of Montauk fishing charters offer specialized trips.
If you’re fishing with a licensed charter captain, chances are your New York fishing license will be covered for you. All you need to do is climb aboard! The majority of charters also provide fishing equipment for guests, as well as lures or live bait.
Local captains recommend bringing warm clothing, no matter when you choose to visit. As is the case with most fishing, hooking your own Cod may involve a bit of a waiting game. Don’t let the potentially harsh winds of the Northeast stop you from landing a trophy catch! If you’re a newer angler, make sure you pack some seasickness medication: Montauk’s offshore waters can be unpredictable and choppy. Come earn the bragging rights of hooking one of the world’s most famous fish, in one of the world's most famous fishing destinations!
