For your next trip to Key Largo, you’re going to want to book a fly fishing charter – these productive waters will be at the top of any serious angler's to-do list. Key Largo fly fishing offers you the chance to target top species in some incredible waters surrounded by jaw-dropping nature.
What to Expect
If you’re fly fishing, chances are you’re going to the flats and other inshore waters to find Tarpon and Snook, as well as Bonefish and Permit. There's something to target year round that will test your skills and bend your rods.
You’ll be spending the day on a bay boat or flats boat, which can take 2–3 people out. These small boats can get into the shallows and hard-to-reach areas with ease, giving you that extra edge over your prey.
Fishing for Tarpon can be more productive in the evenings when these fish are eating. Trips vary from 4–8 hours, with longer trips giving you more time and chances to reel in the "Silver King." Remember, Tarpon must always be released and if they look to be over 40 inches they must not be taken out of the water.
How to Prepare
When fly fishing for Tarpon especially, you’ll need to be able to cast accurately, have good line speed, and be able to double haul. It’s windy out in the Keys, which makes the fishing better but can make it harder to fly fish with precision. Have your skills honed and tested before coming out.
A saltwater fishing license is included in the price, along with all the necessary gear and tackle. Let your captain know in advance if you're bringing your own gear so they can make room. For freshwater fishing, you'll need to buy a fishing license for everyone in your group over 16.
With limited space on board, only bring the necessities, such as snacks and drinks (no glass bottles), non-aerosol sunscreen, a sun hat, and polarized sunglasses with a brown or amber tint – it’s even better if you have a pair with side shields.
Book a Key Largo fly fishing adventure today. You'll be coming back time and again after that first hook-up. The addiction to fishing in these waters is powerful – you've been warned!
