The fly fishing New South Wales has to offer is a well-kept secret. Did you know that some of the best Trout fishing in the world can be found in the mountains here? There are plenty of lakes and rivers in NSW to wet a line in and reel in a beautiful trophy catch.
What to Expect
Whether you head out in a boat, canoe, or kayak, or decide to fish from the shore, you’ll want an experienced guide with you. A 6-hour trip is the minimum time needed to have a successful day out. Check with your guide whether they are comfortable teaching new anglers.
Some of the best lakes and rivers to visit can be found in the Blue Mountains and the Snowy Mountains. Here, there are countless bodies of water all in close proximity to one another, which need to be experienced to be believed. Thredbo River in the Snowy Mountains is a great example of an incredible fly fishing river.
There are Rainbow, Brook, and Brown Trout to target in these waters. Don’t forget about local freshwater species that are just as fun to fish for, such as Australian Bass and Murray Cod.
When saltwater fly fishing offshore, experienced anglers can target Yellowtail Kingfish and Skipjack Tuna. If you’re fishing from shore, you can target Flathead, Bream, Whiting, Ludrick, Australian Salmon and more. This is great in areas such as Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay. Your guide can let you know about any seasonal requirements.
How to Prepare
If heading out with a guide, fly fishing equipment is usually included in the price, along with a fishing license for your group.
When fishing by yourself, you’ll need a long rod with 6 wt, and anglers aged over 18 will need to buy a fishing license.
You’ll need to check when the season opens to fish. Rainbow, Brown, and Brook Trout have closed seasons in NSW from June to October.
There’s a lot of reasons why fly fishing in NSW can’t be missed – come over and discover them for yourself!
