Every summer, I take my grandchildren deep sea fishing. This past summer I took three mid-teen grandchildren on a fishing trip under Captain Brian Coombs of Get Tight Sports Fishing. All had a wonderful time and caught three 40” sea bass which were delicious.
Historically, I’ve regarded fishing as an art, getting variable results. This time, I realize in 2019, that fishing has a scientific component produced by the computer technology that now exists, combined with Captain Brian’s experience.
The first step in our fishing trip was to catch live bait fish. The captain knew exactly where to find these fish and we caught the bait fish.
The next step was to proceed north up the Massachusetts coast line to a general area where sea bass were located. The boat had a sonar system which sent out signals on the left and right side of the boat for about 200 yards. The captain next switched off the gasoline engine in the rear of the boat and turned on an electric engine on the front of the boat. It was very silent. The captain guided the boat into the location of the fish and quickly the sea bass were biting on the bait fish.
The kids loved reeling in the fish, though it was difficult. We took pictures of the catch and sent them to the rest of the family. An older sister responded, “I don’t believe the size of the fish. This must be a posed picture.”
At the end of the trip, Captain Brian offered to filet the fish (actually, he said “super filet”) He did this and we returned home to eat the fish and share them with our neighbors. )
