The last few months of the summer when the water is hot and the fry bait plentiful means mangrove snapper are here in full force and are hungry. Throughout Tampa bay and the Gulf of Mexico the mangrove snappers are doing their spawn and seem to be just about everywhere. Good spots of hard bottom, high relief structure, and structures throughout the bay such as bridge pilings are god spots to find these tasty fish. We have been getting plenty on our charters lately for a fresh fish meal or two. There are also Spanish Mackerel throughout the bay, just find the bait schools and they are not far! Redfish have been very abundant in our area which is also typical for this time of year. These fish are hard fighting and usually pretty easy to fool once you locate them with a live pilchard, pinfish, or a chunk of dead mullet. Redfish are catch and release so we have been spending some time fishing for snapper and mackerel on each trip if clients are interested in keeping food.
