Summer is officially here, and summer salmon fishing in Vancouver is off to a hot start! Coho salmon fishing has been on fire for at least the last few weeks with good numbers of hatchery fish in the mix. In addition, pink salmon should start showing up in numbers any day now, as we are expecting a record return this year, estimated at 27 million fish! And if that weren’t enough, chinook salmon returns for the past few years have also been spectacular, and we expect the same again for this year. The spring fishing for a catch and release only of Chinook salmon has been fantastic and the non-retention will continue until September 1st in the local Vancouver waters. However retention for Chinook will start July 15th but only over across to the Vancouver Island side of the Salish Sea. It's a 20 miles run across or about an hour depending on the sea state and only for 8 hour charters. Locally as of June 1st, we can keep hatchery coho and pink salmon. There is an estimated 27 million Pink Salmon expected to return to the Fraser River which is historically a very huge number. Fishing for coho and pink is fast and furious which makes it a lot of fun and chaos on the boat as there are double, triple and quadruple headers more often than not. While yesterday was a little cloudy and chilly for this time of year, fishing in the Vancouver area continues to be terrific this Spring, with good numbers of chinook salmon in local waters. Soon, the coho salmon will start to fill, and the chinook numbers will also grow as the main summer migrations kick in. Once again, both coho and chinook are forecast to have very strong returns this year, and we are also expecting a huge return of pink salmon as this is a dominant run year for the Fraser River - which literally means millions upon millions of pink salmon homing in on Vancouver area waters this summer. Terrific Winter Fishing and 2025 Outlook! So far, the winter salmon fishing and weather in the Vancouver area has been terrific this season with abundant chinook salmon, clear skies and calm waters! Catches of spot prawns and dungeness crabs, a winter bonus, have also been strong. The 2025 fishing outlook from the Department of Fisheries has also just been released and we are again expecting spectacular chinook and coho salmon returns to this area as the year progresses. As if that weren’t enough, 2025 is also a peak return year for Pink Salmon, which means millions of these scrappy fish will be keeping us busy as well. The winter fishery in Vancouver is off to a solid start. There has been lots of bait holding in the Vancouver harbour (6 miles from the dock) which brings in the feeding Chinook salmon. Although the boat is equipped with a heater, you still have to dress warmly and when weather permitting (wind), it's a wonderful to get out this time of year and soak in the beauty of the city skyline, the snowcapped mountains and the bounty of the ocean
