The best time to fish Manteo is April May and June. You might need to dodge high winds and hurricanes after July through November. Good news though, Manteo has inshore opportunities in the sound for anglers who love to bring home tasty catches. Speckled Trout and Red Drum are GREAT eating fish. So are sheepshead and Striped Bass.

It’s hot but there are fish biting. Just be clear about what species you want since you may be redirected to more easy to catch options like ribbon fish. Also might mean a longer slog with no fish for the species you want. But hey that’s fishing!

Research the charter captains and their boats. Keep an eye on their catches and trip summaries and review. Talk to the captains- be honest, if u don’t fish much, tell them that- explain your expectations. The captains will let you know what they can deliver.

This was our first time fishing in Manteo, we caught a quantity of small fish that will be perfect for dinner, which was our goal. We also took and hour to go for another type after we had the quantity that we were looking for. It was a great experience, a little different than we expected, but a good time was had by all. We know it is early in the season so we did anticipate to have less options as far as what was biting.

If you are there as early in the season as we are, note that you can get some action but less with the listed fish. We landed 25 2-4lb blue catfish in the 3+ hours on the water at the spot he guided us to. That was plenty of action to keep my 10 year old engaged and happy.

Expect changing fishing conditions. Weather conditions can be great, but tide flow will ultimately determine fishing success.

Take the time and money to charter a guide who knows the area. You'll have a much better time and learn the area.

Palmer Randall
kids are fine. bring warm clothing. if you don't bring food, the captain has some on board that you can purchase.

Francis Gamboni
Rain coat for possible weather changes, it's obx expect the unexpected and bring a smile !

Edwin Mills
Remember it's called fishing and not catching, so some days you win, some days you don't. But if you're looking for a great experience go offshore fishing.

Captain Hank adjusts to your style and experience level. Great Captain and knows how to get kids involved. Has a lot of tackle to meet conditions.

Fish with experienced captain. It can be hard to track fish. So, all the local knowledge helps to have the best day possible. Remember, it’s still called fishing. Lol

Fishing inshore can be tricky this time of year. Make sure you check reports and look at reviews. Find a guide who's experienced and knows how to catch a variety of fish.

Offshore is great, but sound side can produce as well! Trout fishing is great if you want to stay in the sound.

The OBX isn't always the best time to catch fish in July, but Manteo has always delivered great Speckled Trout this time of year.

Ask the locals what they are using ,and how they are using it ,and never underestimate how close fish are in the surf.

We had a great time, weather was awesome and the area is beautiful. There’s many species of fish to catch and many friendly charters to help you get on some fish.

Check out X Spearmint charters at Pirate Cove marina. He will show you the ropes and get you on the fish

Definitely go with a guide who has good reviews or from recommendations from a local. A guide will greatly improve you chances of catching fish.

Water temp and cold northern air definitely put a damper on the fishing activity, next time I’ll be coming when it’s warmer. Seems to change year to year, but it’s not dependably good.

Manteo is a bit quite and less tourist-y than much of the banks. I would think fishing from here would be great for novices.

There weren't a lot of fish biting on the day we went out but Captain Hank still made sure we had a great time. Even if the fish aren't biting you can enjoy a nice day out on the water.

It's not great in the off season but we got on the Stripers since they were still schooled up deep in the bay.

Shifting winds can make finding the fish challenging, but that is what fishing is all about. Great little town to explore before or after the fishing is over.

Be prepared for a long day on the water. Pack snacks, sun block, and something to drink. Be patient. Fishing is an experience and will be fun.

Great area for the novice and experienced anglers. There is so many different types of fish to pursue.

We fished in a slow part of the season, the first week of April. I would love to go back and try again for something other than shark.

What can one ask in advance on one's first trip? I was told you had AC and you were untruthful. It did not.
Not offering life vests is irresponsible.
