We took a half day trip with Jamaica Charters. I communicated via messenger with Captain Del Ray (the boat owner) for weeks leading up to the trip. I found him to be pleasant and helpful. We even paid extra to have him pick us up at our hotel to drive us to Falmouth where his boat is. (suppose to be 25 min from hotel) We ended up not taking the long car ride, in fact we paid $60 do go just a few miles and his boat picked us up on a dock near our hotel.
We did not really speak with the captain very much as he was up top driving the boat the whole time. My wife and kids took turns sitting up top with the captain. The first mate however was very talkative and friendly. First mate was always changing baits, reeling up to pull trash of the hooks, and making sure we were all doing ok. We had a bad day fishing, but the trip was good.
The exhaust from the boat (diesel fuel) was pretty strong at times, but that is normal on these boats. It all depended on the way the wind was blowing. If it is too much for you you can always sit up with the captain.
We ended up catching 2 Mahi Mahi, so each of my boys got to reel one in. These were caught with in 30-40 minutes of starting, so we changed the original plan of half bottom fishing/half trolling to do only trolling.(which may have been a mistake, but we all agreed on it and the kids and wife fell asleep so we just rolled with it.
The crew seemed surprised when we wanted to take the fish and have it cooked. Wasn’t a big deal just seemed odd.
If you get the first mate that we had this trip is totally worth it.
Like they say there is a reason they call it fishing and not catching. These guys worked hard to get us on fish, they just were not biting today. If there was guaranteed fish the cost of the trip would be $2000 instead of $550.
