Walleye fishing in Pennsylvania goes far beyond Lake Erie. Yes, the “Walleye Capital of the World” speaks for itself, but plenty of PA rivers offer a different kind of a game. Whether you’re aiming to catch a trophy-sized specimen or hoping for a smaller one that tastes amazing, you’ll find them all in the Keystone State.
River Fishing
Walleye inhabit large rivers with a rocky or gravel bottom, such as the Susquehanna River. You can find them at the tail end of fast runs, just where the river first starts to settle down. The best way to get a bite is by drift fishing.
Walleye also like to stay in the river “pockets,” the areas where different currents meet. They are also light-sensitive, so any daylight trip will be more successful if you look around shady areas. Their movement is very predictable, so if you found a fruitful area, it’s possible you’ll find them there for a whole month. May and early June are great times to target river Walleye.
Walleye are attracted to the same bait as Bass, so crankbaits and spinnerbaits will usually do the trick. If you’re using live bait, it’s best to prepare lots of minnows and chubs.
If you’re looking for Walleye in still-water rivers that are almost like mini-reservoirs, focus on dams, locks, and stream mouths. In these cases, nothing beats jigging.
Lake Erie
The prime time for Walleye fishing in Lake Erie is in summer. In mid-July and August, they’ll move into the depths of the lake, following their food – smelts and alewives. As Walleye are a schooling fish, you’re likely to bump into a whole school of them as soon as you find one – so hold your ground!
The best technique you can use for Walleye during summer is trolling. Trolling with planer boards is mostly used early in the season and as the temperature gets higher and fish move deeper, divers and downriggers work best. If the conditions are right and you’re tired of hearing the engine constantly groan – try drift fishing. This is one of the easier ways to fish and it’s great practice for all novices. Once the fish bites, you need to act fast!
Regulations
- All anglers ages 16 and older must have a valid PA fishing license.
- All Commonwealth inland waters have a harvest limit of 6, with a minimum size of 15 inches. The season is open January 1—March 14 and the first Saturday in May to December 31. However, since the state of PA is divided into six regions, make sure to double-check the regulations for your location.
- Some spots may have a year-round Walleye season, such as Delaware River, Conowingo Reservoir, and Pymatuning Reservoir.
When it comes to Walleye fishing, Pennsylvania has it all! From the most famous spots on Lake Erie to secluded parts of local rivers, your fishing adventure in PA is bound to be amazing!
