Port Clinton Walleye charters on Lake Erie are something that never disappoints. The Western Basin of Lake Erie produces thousands of trophy catches season after season. After just one fishing trip Port Clinton can easily become your next happy place.
When to catch
Right after the winter temperatures start to fade and the ice melts, Port Clinton becomes alive. Walleye begin their spawning on the shallow water reefs in February. By mid-March, there are plenty of smaller fish ready to be caught. If you want something a bit larger, try reeling in the big females.
The first weekends in May are prime time for bigger Walleye. They finish the spawning on the reefs and move out to deeper flats, staying in Port Clinton on their way to the east. Walleye fishing in May is dynamite, with arguably the biggest Walleye anywhere in North America.
Summer Walleye fishing is great for those who have done their homework and have learned to be patient. The Lake Erie’s superstar becomes lazy in the deeper waters. They are looking for an easy meal and fishing is unpredictable. Some days are on fire and can result in a great number of keepers, while other days will leave you with smaller Walleye.
Port Clinton Walleye fishing in the fall, starting from late August, can’t be overlooked. The season produces some of the largest catches of the year. Every time you cruise out of Port Clinton on an autumn day, you know you will come back to shore with a pile of Lake Erie’s gold bars.
Port Clinton Walleye fishing techniques
When drifting the rocks piles for pre-spawning Walleye, jigs with blade baits and minnows are the ticket. If drift fishing is your technique of choice, you can stick to spinners until early November.
When Walleye are done spawning, you can switch to weight-forward spinners tipped with a piece of nightcrawlers. They remain the most common presentation every year along with minnow-leeches.
Aside from drifting, bottom bouncing, jigging, and spinning, trolling remains the most popular fishing method in Port Clinton. Use planer boards, as they allow you to get your baits away from the boat and avoid spooking Walleye. You will cover more water while trolling, hence more potential Eaters at the end of your line!
Plan your Lake Erie trip for earlier or later time of the day. A combination of a low-light fishing and open-water back-trolling can be very productive. However, the opposite strategy can also work. Troll large crankbaits at a speed up to 3.0 mph to pick up some aggressive Walleye.
Walleye Season
There is a fair amount of catches of pre-spawning Walleye from February until March. The end of March can still be pretty cold, although Walleye fishing in Port Clinton is nothing short of excellent. The best weather won’t come until June, but it doesn’t affect the bite. You can chase Walleye on the lake’s western basin until early November.
Ice fishing is also a thing when the conditions permit.
