Michigan Walleye fishing charters have been spoiling anglers from all over the country with world class catches. The ‘Great Lakes State’ has all the rights to call itself the ‘Great Walleye State’ without bragging!
When to fish for Walleye in Michigan
All roads lead to Lake Erie, a Mecca for every Walleye fishermen. ‘The Best Walleye Hole In The Globe’ produces healthy limits from spring until late summer.
Even though there is no disputing that Lake Erie is the absolute best Walleye fishery, there are lots of other places that offer excellent fishing opportunities. Schools of Walleye patrol the weed edges in 10-20 feet of water on both South Lake Leelanau and Long Lake. The season begins in late April and goes through summer.
As well as various lakes, the local rivers hold nice numbers of Walleye. Detroit River, a 32-mile long drain of Lake St. Clair, is famous for spawning runs in spring. April is the prime time for bigger Walleye, but fishing remains stable until early summer.
From mid-summer until late August, Walleye can be found patrolling the waters of Saginaw Bay.
How to catch Walleye in Michigan
If you are on the water during the daytime hours, you’ll want to fish deep for Walleye. If you want to wait until the evening comes, move to the shallower water.
Troll along the contours from 30 to 50-foot with crankbaits or nightcrawlers. Trolling with planer boards is the most common method around, however a lot of local anglers have mastered other techniques as well.
Go for vertical jigging with light line during the daytime. Head to waters as deep as 60 feet and use small jigs, live and artificial bait. Later in the evening, check the bite on the dropoffs and ledges, casting stickbaits. Jigging is one of the most productive methods if you are fishing on the Detroit River.
Bottom line - be versatile, pay a lot of attention to the weather and the water conditions. And, most importantly, find a professional Michigan Walleye guide!
Season
You can go ice-fishing for Walleye during the winter months if the conditions allow. Spawning Walleye can be caught over rocky structures in Michigan’s lakes and tributaries during the spring months. Sport fishing is open year-round.

Late August, after most kids go back to school, the mass tourism dies down and the place isn’t crowded. There are tons of King salmon in the bay, but they can be hit or miss on the bite as they get wise to fishing pressure and/or shift to spawn mode (the only reason the rating isn’t 5 stars)

Expect to catch fish but also expect lulls in between. In August the fish are still moving in close to shore one minute and heading for deeper water the next. In the morning the fish were in close to shore. When the sun came up they headed for deep water. You can also expect to catch a variety of fish. There’s coho, chinook and Lake Trout.

We lost a couple of nice sized salmon because we used other hook & reel techniques that simply don’t work when fishing in Lake Michigan. Following the crews advice we managed to catch plenty of nice size salmon, including the sixteen pounder my son caught.
