With all of its Wahoo fishing charters, Gold Coast seems to be one of the key places to fish for these hard fighters. We all know Wahoo as solitary fish that like offshore reefs and wrecks. Sometimes trolling the open water may entice this brute to charge, and their force is nothing short of amazing. Brave fishermen fish for Wahoo from a kayak. Picture of all this, and just add the Gold Coast, famed for its impressive fishing opportunities. Wahoo may not be your favorite fish to catch, but ‘April Wahoo fishing off Gold Coast’ should make it to your to-do list. Here’s why.
When and where can I get Wahoo?
If you ask local anglers, they will tell you April is the peak season. Wahoo appear with the summertime in November and stay around as late as May. During this time, you should check out the reefs offshore.
One of the most popular spots is the Tweed Nine Mile Reef, as well as the Gravel Patch. These fisheries have seen Wahoo over 20 kilos (44 lbs) throughout the years. It takes a couple of strong fishermen to hold the fish. Wahoo are hard hitters, able to swim hundreds of yards after getting hooked. It can easily take an hour to get them to the boat. Which answers the question of why you should do it - Wahoo put on a fight like few other fish do and Gold Coast has one of the best Wahoo fisheries in this part of the ocean.
How to get Wahoo?
Wahoo are by no means fussy eaters. You could throw in anything and the fish will likely strike. You can start with high-speed trolling. Use spoons as they prove to be highly effective. Local guides will tell you to aim for the speed between 10 and 12 knots - this should yield outstanding bites. If nothing gets hooked, try small live tuna. Ballyhoo and mullet are a good choice to attract them. You could also try vertical jigging. Find a captain to get you out there and test your skills against this majestic pelagic. You won’t regret anything.
