September, we were told, is the low season month for fishing. If that is the case, I can’t imagine high season as we had 3 blue marlin, 15 yellowfin tuna and 1 sailfish.

If you're renting a vehicle, don't trust Google Maps to get you there easily if coming from the Northwest. Some of the roads I drove to get there were rather dicey. Steep, narrow and rough dirt roads with wash outs were encountered on several parts on my trip, making it difficult for anything less to get there safely other than a SUV. Get local advice and go the long way to stay on the paved roads instead. Having said that, the fishing was worth it!

Be open to different styles and techniques of fishing. It's a balance that can't be beat in terms of fun and producing results.

The options are endless but I had only one species as my target fish. Be advised that it is difficult to fish during the rainy season but we managed to make a successful day out of very difficult conditions! Let your captain know ahead of time what your preferred target fish are. Listen to what he recommends— he is the one that fishes daily!! Make your plans in advance and enjoy your trip!

Go offshore fishing. There is a great variety of fish and we did see lots of turtles, dolphins, pelicans and even a whale

We wanted to catch table fish and we did. Tuna was what we were looking for and we ended up with about 25 lbs of fillets.

August for onshore fishing is slow but we still caught fish- both my teens got sea-sick :(

Fishing is always an unknown...took a while for us to get some hits, but the crew didn't waste time in areas that weren't working, they moved to other areas and tried other types of lures. They did whatever they could to help us catch some fish. They'll also do as little or as much as you want. We like to cast and reel in ourselves, but if you aren't an accomplished fisherman, they can do everything up to hooking it and then turn it over to you for the hard work!

Yes the captain has great at finding the fish and we had a great time. Herradura was a good port to go out of. Would highly recommend.

Book a full day so you can go out deep after the big fish like blue marlin and sailfish. We didn't catch a huge number of fish but the 10 ft blue marlin made up for the number. Took about an hour of our trip just to get him to the boat.

No need to bring rain gear or jackets. Even with rain it was well into the high 80’s and the wind while trolling was refreshing. If you keep fish, make sure your hotel will cook it. JW Marriott Guanacaste will not, but the staff will appreciate the fresh fish.

Make sure to use bathroom before, have a really big breakfast, and wear hard-to-stain clothing as the fish can get pretty bloody. Maybe also bring nausea medicine. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also good to bring.
