If you’re into Tarpon fishing Sarasota is probably already on your map for summer vacations. The annual Tarpon migration is one of the most important events of the year here. Every summer, the Sarasota Bay area is swarmed by schools of Tarpon a hundred strong. Anglers also migrate here in similar numbers. Some look to compete, while others are just after the thrill of battling a 200-pound Silver King.
When to target Tarpon
The Sarasota Tarpon buzz starts mid-April, with the first few fish being caught in the area. By May the season is in full swing, and anglers from around the country turn up to give them a royal welcome. It also kicks off the prestigious Sarasota Tarpon Tournament, which has been running since 1930. This is when you will find the best Tarpon fishing Sarasota has to offer. The fish stick around longer than the crowds, though, and by late June you will have more of a chance of fishing in peace.
How to target Tarpon
You have a couple of different options of how to fish for Tarpon. Sarasota Tarpon fishing charters are a seasonal specialty, and every guide has their own take on the best way to go after them.
The first, and perhaps the easiest way to hook yourself a Silver King is by using spinning gear and live blue crab or herring. Every guide worth their salt will have their favorite “honey holes” where you can find these fish in good numbers. Once you’re in place, it’s a case of dropping your bait just past the fish as they “daisy chain” their way along, then pulling it across their path. Easy, right? You wish!
Fly fishing is another way of targeting Tarpon in the shallow sandbanks and grass flats of the Sarasota Bay. The theory behind it is much the same, but the placement needs to be even more precise. Too close, and you risk spooking them. Too far away, and you may not get their attention. It’s all worth it when you finally land it right, though. You can’t beat the thrill of placing your fly just so, and watching it sink lazily in front of these silver behemoths.
