(Acipenseridae spp.)
The Sturgeon fishing BC has up its sleeve will knock your socks off. This species is the largest game fish in British Columbia, with some specimens reaching more than 12 feet in length and 1,000 lb in weight. Add to that a whole lot of fighting power, and this humble bottom feeder takes world class sport fishing to a whole new level!
Where to Go
You’ll find some of the best Sturgeon fishing in the province just outside of Vancouver. Thanks to local conservation efforts, these waters boast one of the largest Sturgeon populations in the world. Every river has its own regulations, so it’s wise to hire a local guide who will help you follow them. Here’s a quick look at BC’s top Sturgeon fishing grounds:
Fraser River
Located west and directly south of Vancouver, Fraser River is the premier destination for Sturgeon fishing in British Columbia. Targeting Sturgeon in these waters is strictly catch and release, but don’t let that stop you – this creature is one of the highlights of sportfishing in BC. Not only is the mighty Sturgeon the largest game fish in the province, but he puts on a fantastic aerial display which some compare to that of a Marlin.
Fraser River Sturgeon fishing charters run out of various locations, most notably Chilliwack, Mission, and Lillooet.
Pitt River
Another excellent location for BC Sturgeon fishing is the Pitt River, which flows from the Pitt Lake slightly north and meets the Fraser River at Douglas Island. Fishing Pitt River and Pitt Lake allows you to cast lines in calmer waters while avoiding crowds.
How to Fish
As in most places, Sturgeon fishing in British Columbia is a combination of luck and practice. A sturdy 11’ rod matched with a conventional reel is recommended. You can use 60-80 lb nylon monofilament.
Sturgeon feed along the bottom, typically in areas where the river narrows and the water flows fast enough to create foaming, white rapids. Dropping a smelly bait in these conditions is perfect. Fresh Salmon roe, fist sized worm balls, meat scraps, and eels soaked in garlic are a few examples of the Sturgeon taste palate.
When to Go
You can catch this species year-round, but the very best Sturgeon fishing BC has to offer lasts from March through November. In fact, these warmer months are so much more productive that many fishing guides on the Fraser River stop fishing for Sturgeon in winter. With a savvy guide by your side, it doesn’t matter when you cast a line – you’re in for a memorable experience!
