Texas Redfish tick all the boxes. Whether you’re looking for a battle with a Bull Redfish or a tasty meal to take home, the Lone Star State delivers. Texas consistently boasts both high numbers of this species and big fish that can be hooked year-round in its waters. No matter the season, fishing for Redfish is on the cards!
If you’re looking for a fierce battle, head out in fall. This is when big Bull Reds migrate out of Texas’ bay systems and into the Gulf. You can also hook into big fish in the summer months. For eating-sized fish, head out in spring. The marshes come alive at this time of year and the inshore fishing is spectacular across the board. Don’t rule out winter angling, either. You might have to change up locations depending on the weather, but the fish are still around!
Texas Redfish are great opponents for both beginners and pro anglers. You won’t need a complicated set up to spin fish or bait cast. Just make sure you’re choosing appropriate tackle for the size of the fish you’re targeting. For a more challenging experience, try hooking them on the fly. These are great targets to practice your casting and presentation skills against.
Redfish are available in a variety of Texan waters. Depending on the season, head inland to tail fish in the marshes or make your way to the coast to fish the surf. Galveston, South Padre Island, Port Mansfield, and the Lower Laguna Madre are just a few of the locations you can visit on your fishing trip.
As always, it’s important to make sure you’re fishing within the rules and regulations. The best way to do that is to head out aboard a fishing charter with a local captain.
