Intro
Muskellunge is the official state fish of Wisconsin so it’s fitting that Green Bay, Wisconsin is one of the best places in the world to go after Musky. Green Bay Musky fishing is a staple of the local fishing culture. The DNR stocks the waters regularly, since roughly 100,000 Musky are caught each year (good news is that 90% of that are released)! Why not add your catch to this record-setting number in Green Bay?
How to catch Muskellunge
How you try to land a Musky depends mostly on what time of year you’re fishing. If you want to pack as much Muskellunge fishing in a year, start off by fishing rivers. You should target shallows, ideally 4’ deep or less. Small bucktails presented thoroughly while casting perpendicularly to the current make for a tasty trap.
As the Bay heats up, the fish will start leaving the rivers. Sand flats and weed beds are the perfect places for Musky to lurk in, and for you to take a shot at them. Fishing the clearer waters of the Bay with gliders and twichbaits while doing perch patterns can land you a monster Musky. An important thing to note is that Musky are much less likely to take your bait when it’s moving. Proper timing takes time to learn, so fishing with an experienced Musky guide is a great first step.
When and where to go
Seasonality changes every year, but Musky can usually be harvested from the end of May to the end of November.
Anglers who don’t mind the winter chill can go ice fishing for Musky in Green Bay. The Bay can freeze solid if the weather is cold enough but you should always be careful: ice pressure cracks can form and are potentially dangerous. They like the deeper waters in the middle of the Bay during high winter.
As the weather warms up you can find them in rivers, trolling and drift fishing are the most popular techniques used during spring. As the ice melts completely and the waters of Lake Michigan and Green Bay warm up enough, you should hit the edges of Green Bay. Underwater structures and reed lines are the safest bet.
