Stretching east from New York City out onto the plentiful waters of the Atlantic, this island provides unrivalled access to some of the East Coast’s hottest Flounder fishing grounds. Step aboard your Long Island Flounder fishing charter, and get ready to explore the plethora of sandy shallows, bays, and flats that this species just loves to flock to.
What can I expect?
Historically, fishing in Long Island was all about being able to feed yourself, your family, and your neighbors – this is why the main focus is on huge fish that taste incredible, rather than hard-fighting big game species!
The oft-underrated Flounder may not be known for its fighting spirit, but it packs a serious punch when it comes to flavor. On top of this, it’s the perfect fish for anglers of all ages and skill levels to target.
Rather than leading you on a high-speed chase through the flats, Flounder prefer to stay in one spot, and usually gather in groups. So if you hook into one, you’ve probably found yourself a Flatfish goldmine! This is the perfect opportunity for newer fishermen and families with little ones to learn and perfect their casting off technique, as well as bringing something tasty onto the boat.
If you’re a more experienced angler, you’ll get to test your sight fishing and precision skills with this sneaky species. Flounder love camouflaging themselves against murky seafloors, making them very hard to spot. Once you’ve located your target, you’ll bounce your chosen bait or lure across the sand to tempt your fish into biting!
Where should I go?
There’s one place in Long Island that’s become especially synonymous with great fishing, and that’s Montauk – so it comes as no surprise that there’s plenty of Flounder to be found here! Located on the tip of the island, this town provides access to the shoreline of the Atlantic, as well as the Long Island Sound. Because of this, the vast majority of Flounder fishing charters can be found here.
That’s not to say that Flounder fishing is only reserved for Montauk, though. Generally, any location along the island that has access to the shoreline of the Atlantic or the Long Island Sound will offer up some excellent Flatfish action.
If you’re visiting the south shore, Shinnecock Bay yields plentiful results, and chances are you’ll be able to find a charter that can cater exactly to your needs. Heading to the northeastern side of Long Island? Hamilton and Port Jefferson are your best bet when it comes to fishing charters that’ll have you hooking plenty of Flounder!
Need to know
This species can be found inhabiting the waters of Long Island in droves from April through December, but the biggest and best-tasting Flatfish are reserved for the spring and winter months. Please be aware that Long Island's inshore fishing season is open from April through December.
The vast majority of Long Island fishing charters will cover your fishing license, as well as all of the gear you’ll need to hook your Flatfish. Local charter captains also love discussing their island’s fishing past, so you may be treated to a fun impromptu history lesson. All you need to bring along is a keen desire to pack your cooler full of some tasty table fare!
