Thanks to its delicious taste and ability to reach huge sizes, Flounder has made a serious name for itself when it comes to fishing in Texas. In fact, this somewhat freaky-looking Flatfish is often billed as one of the top species you should target here. Luckily, you’ll find a wealth of Texas Flounder fishing charters ready to take you out, no matter whether you’re located up north, down south, or somewhere along the middle of this state!
What can I expect?
In the past, anglers may have scoffed at the idea of Flounder fishing being labeled as “exciting,” but Texan fishermen know the truth! There’s a wide variety of options for catching them, and newbies and experts alike will find a technique that truly “hooks” them.
Rod and Reel
This conventional technique is a popular way to hook Flounder, especially in North Texas, where popular inshore waters, such as Sabine Lake and Galveston Bay, tend to be muddy. This is a good thing, as Flounder love making a home on sandy coastal floors!
Many charters in these areas offer a hands-on experience, so even newbies can cast off for Flounder using this fish's favorite snack, mudminnows, or soft jigheads. You’ll be shown how to bounce and jig your bait like a pro, and hopefully will provoke this fish into ambushing!
Gigging
Looking for a slightly different angling experience? Head to Texas’s Coastal Bend (also known as Central Texas), which covers everywhere from Port O’Connor to Port Aransas. The majority of fishing charters provide gigging trips, and this truly Texan technique shouldn’t be missed!
For the best results, you’ll usually depart when it’s dark, and will travel on a special “gigging boat” equipped with built-in lights that illuminate what’s taking place underwater. Your captain will make sure you’re armed with a gig (which looks something like a three-pronged spear), and when you’ve located your Flounder, you’ll plunge this into the water – and your fish!
Bowfishing
If you want to try an amped up version of gigging, make sure you check out charters that offer bowfishing. You’ll be using a bow and arrow that’s been modified for water-use, and will have to use all of your skills and focus to make sure your aim is on point.
Bowfishing generally takes place from flats boats with seriously shallow drafts, and is common in the south of the state, where you’ll have access to the vast waters of Laguna Madre. Some captains will encourage you to leave your vessel and wade – make the most of this technique and give it a go!
How to Prepare
You’ll need to purchase a fishing license before you head out on your Flounder-fishing expedition. These are available online, or at local bait and tackle shops.
Sticking to rods and reels, or want to give gigging a go? Your captain will generally provide all the gear you need for a productive day, including bait. Ready to fire off on a bowfishing adventure? Check with your captain first, as some charters prefer you to have previous experience, and bring your own gear. Get ready for an incredible adventure in the “Lone Star” state!

April a little early in the season for reds, some days good, some slower. Fishing improves in May and red hot in June and July. Good fishing for reds until December but they move around. Incredible lake! We live in NW SA and were home in a half an hour. Incredible!
