If you’re heading to Stockton, don’t miss out on a Stockton Lake fishing experience. Located in the southwest of Missouri just two hours out of Kansas City, Stockton Lake is a reservoir covering around 25,000 acres. This huge reservoir is in the middle of 18,000 acres of public land and has good populations of Crappie, Walleye, Catfish, Flathead, Bluegill, White Bass, Largemouth Bass, and more.

What To Expect

You can stay in a lodge overnight or just pop out for a couple of hours of fishing. The fishing here is peaceful with an “off the beaten track” vibe but with plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Go sailing, horseback riding, hiking, and take in the nature surrounding you when visiting Stockton.

You can catch these fish throughout the year, even in the height of summer – you’ll just need to look in the right places for them. Head to the upper part of the reservoir for the best chance of reeling in good-sized Largemouth Bass, especially from May to June. These and Smallmouth Bass are hard-fighting fish perfect for more experienced anglers to target. Target them on the fly to really give yourself a challenge.

The whole family can enjoy the winter fishing opportunities on Stockton Lake for Crappie – these fish are plentiful from the winter into the spring, when they begin spawning. With numbers so high, the kids won’t have to wait long to reel in their catch.  

How to Prepare

Wherever you fish in Missouri, people over 16 will need a fishing license. 

There are also limits on the fish you can take and the size of the fish. If you choose to fish with a guide, they’ll have the latest information on what needs to be released and of what size.

Local guides also provide all the gear and tackle you need. Be sure to ask if they provide snacks and drinks, or if you’re welcome to bring your own.You’ll also need to pack your own sun protection, and polarized sunglasses are a bonus.
