These barrier islands are famous for their world-class flats fishing, most notably for Redfish and Speckled Trout. These pristine waters also hold healthy populations of Black Drum, Sheepshead, Jack Crevalle, Cobia, Flounder, and many more. If you’d like to explore deeper waters, you can head to the Gulf and target Amberjack, Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Red Snapper, and Tuna.
Local charters offer half day, full day, and extended day trips. On a half day trip, you’ll most likely stay inshore in calm waters – a perfect option for beginners or families with kids. Longer trips will see you fishing further offshore, targeting larger species. These trips are great for more experienced anglers looking to fish multiple spots and target a wide range of species.
Some key spots to check out inshore are Shoalwater Bay and the Chandeleur Sound, to the west of the islands. To the east and to the south, you can explore the Gulf and target larger pelagic species. Some species, such as Grouper and Snapper, are subject to seasonality and others have size and bag limits.
