Lost a Tarpon

Fished with Chuck from Atlanta the last two days, in nice weather. We drifted up to a pod of big tarpon that were quietly rolling, and I cast a heavy spoon into their midst about 30 yards away. Hooked up, and it was a big one. Cranked the boat engine and we began to follow. One mile offshore, and more than an hour later, after watching the tarpon gulp air as close as five feet away, we noticed the spoon hung in his back about a yard behind his lips. Estimated his weight at 120 pounds. Using a trout rod with 12-pound line, the situation was hopeless. That fish changed direction countless time, going under the boat, and it was a lot of work. Fortunately my boat turns on a dime, however. That fish never would jump, though one time his tail came up three feet out of the water while he was gulping air. For a half hour, two other big tarpon accompanied him! Anyway, I finally tightened the drag and broke him off. Chuck was very patient for more than an hour, unable to fish. We went back to trout and redfish and caught some nice ones. Eleven released redfish, though all were too short to keep. Here's one of our trout. Bluefish took away some of my spoons and a topwater plug, but we boxed some of those fish.
